Food Stamps supplement low-income individuals and households by increasing their food purchasing power. The Food Stamp Program (FSP) increases food purchasing power and affords access to healthier food that reduces the risks of diet-related chronic diseases. Food Stamp coupons have been phased out. Benefits are distributed with a debit-style card to make food purchases. Cardholders can access food benefits at the point-of-sale terminals of retailers who are authorized to accept Food Stamp benefits.
