USFS: Beckwourth Road Relocation

Location:   Rodgers Creek  Road in Beckwourth Ranger District

Sponsors:   US Forest Service

Project Type: Restoration

Est. Cost:  $ 212,400                Amount Funded:  $63,500  Majority Funding approved Fall 2004

Est. Start Date:   6/1/05                Est. End Date: 10/31/05

Project Description:  This project represents the final work necessary to complete an aggressive effort to move roads out of the riparian zones of Last Chance Creek and its tributaries. To complete the relocation of 3.9 miles of roadway adjacent to Rodgers Creek, 1.4 miles of new construction and 1 mile of reconstruction will be implemented well upslope of the stream.  The new roads will allow the decommissioning of 2.2 miles of road that is currently situated within the riparian corridor of Rodgers Creek.  Additionally 0.8 miles of new road will be constructed upslope of Last Chance Creek, replacing and allowing the obliteration of 0.9  miles of road 26N28 that currently runs through the riparian corridor of Last Chance Creek.

Project Goals/Objectives:
Improve water quality and wildlife habitat in the Last Chance Creek watershed by:

reducing sediment delivery to Rodgers Creek from roads
reducing disturbance to wildlife and fragmentation of wildlife habitat by obliterating roads

Enhance upland vegetation management by improving road access to Rodgers Canyon and Jordan Creek for fire fighting, recreational and forest management vehicular traffic by:

Improving road drainage and drivability; reduce road surface rutting and washout
Reduce future maintenance needs and costs.

Project Activities:
Fall 2005:
From road 26N15, a new tie road was constructed to join with a reconstructed non-system road and traverse southeast to a segment of 26N15 that was relocated away from Rodgers Creek in 2000.  This road construction work was completed in fall 2005.
The decommissioning of 2.2 miles of road currently situated within the riparian corridor of Rodgers Creek will be performed by Plumas National Forest staff and equipment during the 2006 construction season.
Additionally, this project consisted of 0.8 miles of new road that was constructed upslope of Last Chance Creek, replacing and allowing the obliteration of 0.9 miles of road 26N28 that currently runs through the riparian corridor of Last Chance Creek.  That decommissioning work will also be performed during the 2006 construction season.

Expenditures June 2005 – December 2005: $ 59,466.01
