Sierra Valley Groundwater Management District
Monitoring Wells

Location: Sierra Valley  - Chilchoot and Beckwourth areas

Sponsors: Sierra Valley Groundwater Management District

Project Type: Hydrogeologic study and data collection

Est. Cost:   $151,700                     Amount Funded:  $151,700 Majority”A” funds

Est. Start Date:  Fall 2004                  Est. End Date: Spring 2005

Project Description:

  • Subsurface geologic cross sections mappings to be prepared to indicate major water-producing strata and other geological data (not currently available) in Chilcoot and Beckwourh area.

  • Cluster monitoring well construction proposed for Chilcoot and Beckwourth area to be used for future continuous water level monitoring.

Project Goals/Objectives:

Detailed water-level elevation and direction of groundwater flow maps included in the cross sections study will provide the information required to access the potential for groundwater recharge projects in the upper watershed. Cluster monitoring wells will provide water level data to analyze the effectiveness of temporal retention in relationship to groundwater recharge in Sierra Valley.  The study includes monitoring wells and identification of water producing zones in areas of the Sierra Valley groundwater basin where monitoring has been at a minimum. The areas of Chilcoot and Beckwourth have been identified as “data gaps” and are targeted in the District’s proposal.

Project Activities:

  • Two nested monitor wells were installed in Chilcoot and Beckwourth, tested and water samples collected for chemical analysis.

  • New subsurface geologic cross sections were developed.

  • Updated records of metered pumpage and water levels for Spring 2003 through Spring 2005

  • Interpreted trends after reviewing water level records extending back to 1960 in conjunction with 1989 – 2005 records of metered pumpage and water levels. Conclusion: metered pumpage of 6000 acre-feet per year results in near stable water levels

  • Released a technical report on the 2003-2005 Sierra Valley Hydrogeologic Studies.  Limited copies available for review from Plumas County Flood Control & Water Conservation District, 1834 East Main St. Quincy

  • Submitted proposal to Watershed Forum to rollover surplus funds from the Monitoring Well project to aquifer testing

Project Status:  Completed May 2005                  Amount Spent : $120,984
