Project Description:
The proposed
Feather River Watershed Public Awareness Campaign
is a concerted effort to bring water quality and watershed-related
information into the homes and minds of residents of the Feather
River Watershed. By engaging landowners, educators, students and
community members in multiple formats for learning about watershed
issues, improved understanding and increased participation in
stewardship activities will result over time. |

Project Goals/Objectives:
Goal 1: Increase citizens’ capacity to make informed
decisions about their behavior that affects water quality and
related watershed issues.
Objective 1a: Sponsor a community watershed festival that
encourages stewardship and celebration of the Feather River
watershed.
Objective 1b: Write three articles for local newspapers with
watershed or water quality related themes.
Objective 1c: Develop three advertisements for local newspapers
that focus on watershed or water quality related themes.
Goal 2: Provide educational publications and materials that
tell the story of watershed processes and restoration efforts as
well as identify ways citizens can improve water quality in the
Feather River Watershed.
Objective 2a: Create a full-color 20”x24” illustrative poster
of the Feather River Watershed with information about watershed
processes, natural and cultural history, significant features, and
ways to keep the watershed healthy.
Objective 2b: Develop a booklet (or series of three brochures)
for landowners that demonstrate watershed restoration techniques
with diagrams and before/after pictures.
Objective 2c: Create water quality awareness and stewardship
information for local communities by developing education outreach
materials (brochure, bookmark and bumper sticker).
Objective 2d: Develop an identifiable icon and tag line that
will become associated with stewardship of the Feather River
Watershed. |

Project Activities:
October 2005 – March 31, 2006:
Provide materials and presenters for Headwaters Festival (October 8
and 9, 2005; developed draft information brochure for landowners
&community members.

April 2006 – June 2006:
Continued work on
development of a Feather River Watershed information brochure;
worked with graphic designer on the illustrative watershed map. The
timeline for completing the educational brochures and map has been
extended. Outreach/education activities included: hands-on insect
booth featuring close up viewing of live aquatic insects at the
Quincy Children’s Faire; community
storm drain stenciling
project in Portola in which 51 storm drains were stenciled; and
another close up look at aquatic insects & their adaptations was
featured at the Sierra Valley Birds, Barns and BBQ.
