The Plumas County Tobacco Use Reduction Services offers the American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking Program. The smoking cessation program is offered to Plumas County residents. The program is based on the underlying premise that smoking is a learned habit. Individuals taught themselves how to smoke. They practiced so well and so long that smoking became as automatic a behavior for them as breathing, eating or sleeping. Quitting is a process during which individuals must consciously (and conscientiously!) unlearn this automatic behavior of smoking and substitute healthful, new alternatives. The program offers individuals a step-by-step plan for quitting smoking. It does not focus on scare tactics or offer a lot of statistical information on health effects. We assume that people who come to the program already know that smoking is dangerous to their health. During the session, different techniques are introduced. They are based on principles and methods that help the individuals gain control over their behavior. This makes quitting a less stressful experience, and offers a systematic approach to quitting. The program encourages individuals to work on the process and problems of quitting smoking not only individually, but as a group. Group interaction is the critical part of the program. The facilitator is a trained professional who introduces new techniques, initiates group participation and offers support and guidance. The Freedom From Smoking Program is an eight week course. The first meeting is an orientation session and overview of the program.
